The production was designed around the concept of a silent retreat in the woods and to envelop and include the audience in our retreat. The scenic design focused on structure, form, and fabric. The fabric, also the primary projection surface, was overlapping sections of 56 inch muslin 25 feet long to form the main sail and fixed side panels. The same fabric was also used to bring the design into the house with six panels of the same muslin that were 12 feet long. The main sail and fixed side pieces included a pipe pocket at the mid point. The additional pipe allowed the sail to be pulled upstage and give it depth and it was the attachment point for the winches. The tops of the sail and fixed side panels are all rigged from the same batten. The fixed side panels also have a pipe pocket at the mid-point but they are hung independently of the main sail. The main sail being able to move in and out aids in the ability to change locations; in addition the panels of fabric are not sewn together below the mid-point allowing them to be drawn up in different ways.
